Research and Synthesis
In conducting contextual interviews, our team found a high turn-over rate in new employees. This was due to excessive stress levels surrounding the acquisition of new skills in a short period of time and the pressure to be efficient and accurate while juggling multiple orders for the first time. With KAYA, baristas-in-training are taken through a one-on-one training cycle, with the ability to ask Kaya for help every step of the way. Also, Kaya streamlines the coffee shop workflow by processing and managing orders.

During competitive research, we found several organization and scheduling applications. However, most served as one-way communication tools with no feedback from or coordination between event participants.

We sketched several use scenarios in order to refine the system architecture.

We envisioned a mobile information system that would enable busy moms to stay on track with the evolving schedules of event participants through consistently updated user-fed data. Information shared ranges from geographically visualized carpool invites to dynamic supplies lists with request and response functionality. View the demo to see how SCORE works!

Fligk Scenario

I designed Fligk to be placed on the floor. Users can horizontally scroll through the list of games using their feet. Once a game is selected, users engage in a game that involves only the use of their feet for participation and action. Fligk also interrupts a user’s gaming experience with quick notifications regarding ensuing bus arrivals. In the future, Fligk will accommodate branding and advertising as well.

Experience is Information
During directed storytelling interviews we found students struggle with learning new cultural cues and norms. Information gathered is largely through multiple trial and error attempts or word-of-mouth interactions. PittExchange leverages the power of the international student community to share experiences or questions with others, with the aim of providing easy access to varied reliable information through a single source.

Challenges and Insights
Building trust amongst members from multiple nationalities was a key issue we faced. In reviewing our research we found, students don’t discriminate between information sources based on nationality. Rather they look for the most accountable and trusted source. Thus, we introduced ‘Trusted’ and ‘Newbie’ badges, awarded to users by the community as their story ratings rise. Additionally, a pre-existing body of International students would serve to ratify information posted on the site.
